Koh Phi Phi Islands Thailand
Koh Phi Phi Islands are 2 of the most beautiful islands in Thailand. Koh Phi Phi is actually 2 islands close together called Koh Phi Phi Don, the largest island and where you find the accommodation to stay. Just a short boat ride away is Koh Phi Phi Leh, a very popular tourist destination as the main beach on Koh Phi Phi Leh has became famous as it was where the movie The Beach with Leonard DiCaprio was filmed.
The Koh Phi Phi Islands are located in the Straits of Malacca (Andaman Sea), off the western coast of Thailand, close to Krabi on the mainland and just south of Phuket island.
Koh Phi Phi Don
Koh Phi Phi Don has lot of different hotels to suit all budgets, from cheap hotels to expensive luxury resorts. The majority of the interior of Koh Phi Phi Don island is forest / jungle. The accommodation is found along the coast on the beaches and mostly at Ton Sai Bay (where the ferry arrives on the island) and Loh Dalum Bay which is located just a few minutes away from Ton Sai Bay. Ton Sai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay are separated by a small stretch of land (see pic below).
Loh Dalum Bay has plenty of water sports activities including kayaking, parasailing, wind surfing and some good spots of snorkeling.
Directly across from Ton Sai Bay is Monkey Beach, which is a small beach that some macque monkeys visit. The monkeys are not agressive and will sit close to you on the beach allowing you to get some good photos.
The waters around Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Leh are part of the Phi Phi Marine Park so the marine life is protected though the huge number of visitors has taken it’s toll on the marine life around this area, though there is still some amazing snorkeling and scuba diving to be done.
Koh Phi Phi Leh
The beach where the movie The Beach was filmed is a beautiful white sandy beach called Maya Beach. Maya Beach is surrounded by a large bay with vertical cliff faces. Unfortunately is it very hard to get any good pictures of the beautiful scenery of this bay due to the huge number of tourists that visit each day. There are day trips direct from Phuket, Krabi and from Koh Phi Phi Don just to go to this beach. At any time during the day there are hundreds of boats parked up on the beach with thousands of tourists roaming around.
