The Sydney to Melbourne flying route is the busiest in Australia and in the top 10 busiest flying routes in the world. Qantas has more than 40 flights between Sydney and Melbourne each day and there more flights available on Jetstar, Virgin and Tiger Air.
The majority of the flights between Sydney and Melbourne, Qantas uses the Boeing B737-800 which has a seating capacity of 168 passengers. During the peak times in the morning and afternoon, Qantas also uses the larger Airbus A330-300 which has a seating capacity of 297 passengers, with 269 seats in Economy and 28 seats in Business Class. Previously I had review the Qantas A330-200 Business Class from Sydney to Melbourne. Now here is the review of the Economy class seats on the A330-300.
When you are booking your flight on the Qantas website, you can check which aircraft Qantas has scheduled for the flight by clicking on the flight number and pop-up box appears with the flight details including which plane will be operated. Sometimes the aircraft might change for operational reasons.
At the airport
The Qantas flights leave from Terminal 3 which is a dedicated Qantas terminal.
At Sydney Domestic airport, Qantas has fully automated check-in kiosks which will issue you your boarding pass and any bag tags you need for your check in luggage. You then use the automated bag drop facility.
Once you have passed through the airport security, there are plenty of shops and a large food court with a great selection of food.
As a Qantas Frequent Flyer I get access to the Qantas lounge where i can get some complimentary food and drink and the lounge has excellent views over the boarding gates of some excellent plane spotting of the Qantas planes arriving and leaving.
On the plane
The Seat
The Economy Seats on the Qantas A330 have some excellent legroom. With a width of 17″ (43cm) and a pitch of 31″ (78.7cm) there is plenty of legroom. I am 187cm tall and there is space between my knee and the seat in front.
Directly under the entertainment screen is a USB port for charging your mobile phone. There is also a universal power outlet for each seat in Economy.
The Entertainment System
The entertainment system has a nice 11.1 inch touch screen which is loaded with heaps of latest release movies and TV shows.
There is a really nice feature of just 1 touch to pull up the electronic flight map and then once press again to return to the movie you were watching.
There is also a copy of the excellent Qantas in flight magazine.
The Food
This flight I took left Sydney at 10.30am so we were just served a snack with a drink. The snack served on this flight was a packet of small biscuits with white chocolate chips and raspberry pieces.
Final say on this flight
I do prefer to fly between Sydney and Melbourne on the Airbus A330-300 compared to the B737-800. The A330-300 is a much bigger aircraft and there is a bit more leg room than the B737. The take-off is more impressive in a larger plane.
This is the busiest route for Qantas and I have always enjoyed the service on board the Qantas flights between Sydney and Melbourne.
