At the airport
Perth Airport is about 20 minutes by taxi from downtown Perth city area. All Qantas flights leave from the dedicated Terminal 4.
Qantas have automated check-in kiosks and automated bag drop so check in is a breeze. There are also Qantas service desks in case you have any problems checking in.
Terminal 4 is relatively small but there is are still quite a few shops for shopping and getting something to eat.
There is also a Qantas Club Lounge so if you are a Qantas Gold Frequent Flyer you can enter the lounge which has a good selection of food, a fully stocked bar and it also has great views over the runway to see the planes landing and taking off.
On the plane
The Airbus A330-200 that was used for this flight was registration number VH-EBC, plane name ‘Surfers Paradise’. This plane was built in 2002 and joined the Qantas fleet in 2003, so is now more than 15 years old but still looks in very good condition on the outside and inside thanks to the great maintenance crew at Qantas.
The seat
This Qantas A330-200 has 2 cabin classes, Business Class with 28 Vantage XL Business Class pods which are total lay flat, and 243 seats in Economy Class.
The Economy Class seats have a width of 17.5″ (44.45 cm) and a pitch of 31 inches (78.7 cm) which gives some nice leg room. I am 187cm tall and I have plenty of legroom between my knees and the seat in front. The seat configuration in Economy Class is a 2-4-2.
There are 2 USB ports installed in the seat in front to plug in and charge your electronic devices.
The Entertainment Unit
On this particular A330-200, there are no built in entertainment TV screens. In the seat pocket there is an iPad that is loaded up with plenty of movies and TV shows and also has a flight map.
The entertainment iPad can be fitted to the seat in front but only after take off. During take off and landing you need to hold the iPad in your hands if you want to watch the entertainment.
There is also a copy of the excellent Qantas in flight magazine called Spirit of Australia.
The food
One meal is served on this flight between Perth and Sydney. In Economy there was a choice of 3 different meals including a vegetarian dish. I chose this delicious beef ratatouille which came with some cheese and crackers and I had some tasty Australian red wine.
I was disappointed that no dessert was served on this flight. Normally they will give you a chocolate or some ice cream but on this flight there was nothing. On a previous flight from Melbourne to Perth they served some nice Weis Mango Ice Cream bars which was a nice finish to the meal.
Final say on this flight
This flight is only 4 hours and 10 minutes. That was enough time to watch a full movie, enjoy the meal and sit back and stare out the window.
The one negative experience I had was with one of the old cranky male staff on board. I went to the toilet and when I came out I decided to take a picture of inside the cabin. I do have a Instagram account for airline photos and do like to post a pic of inside the cabin as well as outside the cabin. When I was taking the picture, he came up behind me and with an angry voice said ‘Can I help you?’ When I turned around he just snapped ‘You shouldn’t be taking pictures inside the aircraft as you are not in a public place’.
Well i am not sure if this is a rule that Qantas adhere to or just a cranky old man having his say. Now if it is a rule then I am open to listening to the rules and abiding by them. I heard what he said but I just didn’t like the way he said it.
This was a really bad customer experience. I am always happy to abide by the rule. He could have calmly told me that there is a rule that you are not allowed to take photos inside the plane. Does anyone know if this is a rule?
I think he was just being cranky and provided and nasty customer experience.
