Great Chinese Food at Spice Temple Restaurant Melbourne
Spice Temple is one of Neil Perry’s restaurants located at Southbank Melbourne, at the front of the Crown Entertainment Complex, right next the Yarra River next to the Melbourne CBD.
Now I was a bit skeptical going to a Chinese restaurant run by an Australian chef. But after a meal here I can vouch that this restaurant serves up some authentic Chinese food, with real Chinese flavours this ticks the box on many levels.
The food menu at Spice Temple has dishes from the lesser known regions of China. This is not just your typical Cantonese food! They have dishes from Sichuan, Yunnan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangxi and Xinjiang.
I went in for lunch and I was lucky to get a great waiter who helped me choose my food. I was dining alone and was not sure how big the dishes were. My waiter gave me a great explanation of the dishes. I didn’t want to eat too much but wanted a dish that would fill me up. I asked what he thought was the best dish on the menu and without hesitating he said the Roasted Duck in traditional Peking style pancakes.
Now this was a dish I had my eye on so his recommendation was accepted. This was a great dish. Nice pieces of succulent duck which you put on the thin Peking style pancakes and then dibble on the thick dark hoisin sauce and add a slice of the cucumber and shallots.
This is a dish that I had eaten a few times on my trip to Beijing China and the flavour of this dish at Spice Temple were exactly the same as I had experienced in China.
The drink menu has a great selection of beers and ciders as well as a good selection of wines. The beers available included Tsing Tao Lager from China. When eating Chinese food, why not have a Chinese beer!
I will definitely be back to try some of the other dishes on the Spice Temple menu. There is a Spice Temple in Sydney which is where I live, so I will get in there soon and try the food there.
