The Food in Bangkok

Where to stay in Bangkok

Bangkok is huge and the most popular tourist attractions are spread far and wide around the city. There are 5 very popular tourist areas in Bangkok which is well connected with public transport which makes is easy and cheap to get to all corners of Bangkok.

There is a huge range of accomodation in each of the popular areas from Backpacker style dorms to the ultra luxury 5 star hotels. These popular tourist areas to stay are:

Lower Sukhumvit area, Siam, Silom, The Riverfront, Chinatown

There other areas of Bangkok which are much cheaper to stay but still very much connected include areas like Onnut in the start of the Upper Sukhumvit Area. From Onnut you can get the BTS 5 – 6 stations to get to Phrom Phong, Asok or Nana for shopping and nightlife.

How to get around Bangkok?

Bangkok has an extensive public transport network including above ground trains, underground subway trains, buses and ferries, There are also plenty of taxis, Tuk Tuks, motorbike taxis and private car hire.

The BTS – Bangkok Skytrain is the above ground train system with 62 stations on 3 different lines. Fares start from 17 Baht up to 47 Baht for single trips. You can buy single trip tickets, one day passes or if you’ve spending alot of time in Bangkok then get a Rabbit card which you can load up and tap on tap off throughout your trip without having to feed money into the ticket vending machine each time.

MRT – Bangkok’s Metropolitan Rapid Transit is the subway system with 54 stations across 70 kilometers of tracks.

River and Canal Boats and Ferries Bangkok has an extensive water network with the massive Chao Praya River running through the heart of Bangkok and there are many smaller canals where you can also catch public boats. Read more about catching the ferries and boats in Bangkok.

The Weather in Bangkok

Bangkok and Thailand are hot and humid all year round. There is a dry season from November to May/June which is the best time of year to visit. The wet season in Bangkok runs from June to October – late September to mid October has the most rain, with typical cloudy days and many showers throughout the day and evening.

Weekends Away from Bangkok:

Pattaya is around 2 hours drive from Bangkok
Koh Larn is a small island off the coast of Pattaya
Hua Hin is 3 hours by car or train from Bangkok.
Koh Samet is a beatiful island 4 hours drive plus ferry from Bangkok. You have to pass through Pattaya.
Koh Chang is like a large island which is a bit over 5 hour drive from Bangkok. There are flights to the nearby Trat Airport with transfers to Koh Chang including the ferry crossing

How to get to Bangkok?

There are 2 International airports in Bangkok, the main airport is Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) first opened in 2006. International medium to long haul flights will land at Suvarnabhumi. There are also domestic flights to every corner of Thailand and regional flights around Asia.. The airport is connected to the city with a Airport Link Train Service. A taxi to downtown Bangkok will cost between 400 Baht – 500 Baht. You can book a Grab Taxi to pick you up from the airport. On arrivals you can go to the lower ground floor (where the train leaves from) and buy a local SIM card for your phone with Internet access. There are also money changers down there thgough you will get a better rate once you are in the city.

The older Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) services domestic and Asia regional flights on mostly budget airlines. Don Mueang was the original international airport.
