Khao Man Gai Chicken Rice in Sukhumvit Bangkok
Khao Man Gai is the Thai version of Hainanese Chicken rice (poached chicken with coconut rice). There are plenty of restaurants and street carts where you can buy very cheap chicken rice. I prefer to eat in the food courts in the large shopping malls of Bangkok, as they usually have strict hygene practices compared with the street carts and often they are cheaper. Here are some locations in the Sukhumvit area where you can buy Khao Man Gai:
The best place to get Khao Man Gai Chicken Rice in Sukhumvit is in the Pier 21 Food Court in Terminal 21 Shopping Mall. There is a stall (number 3 stall) that sells Hainanese Chicken Rice for only 32 Baht. The serving is small but you can buy a large set meal with more chicken for 100 Baht. For 37 Baht they sell a mixed plate with half Khao Man Gai Hainanese Chicken (boiled chicken) and the other half fried chicken. Read more about Hainanese Chicken Rice at Pier 21.
Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice is an excellent food stall located in the Gourmet Eats Food Court with Emquartier Shopping Mall, located next to Phrom Phong BTS Station. They serve classic Khao Man Gai – Hainanese Chicken Rice cooked to a 50 year old family recipe. It is that good they were listed in the Michelin Bab Guide 2020. The small Chicken Rice dish sells for 80 Baht. They also serve fried chicken.
Street Stalls selling Khao Man Gai in Sukhumvit Bangkok
I have not tried these street stalls but have seen them selling Khao Man Gai in Bangkok:
Heng Heng Khao Man Gai is a famous street stall located right next to Phrom Phong BTS Station (Exit 2). They have been serving Khao Man Gai for many years. While it is a street stall, you can eat indoors in the dining area used for quite a few street stalls outside. They serve a plate of their classic boiled Khao Man Gai for 50 Baht.
Khao Man Gai on Soi 4 Nana Sukhumvit – a little bit further down from The Dawin Hotel on Soi 4 Nana, on the opposite side of the road, you’ll find a small street cart which serves up very cheap Khao Man Gai. Here you can get the traditional boiled chicken rice for only 50 Baht, or you can get the fried chicken with the coconut rice for 60 Baht.
